About BE

Broken Elevator is a philosophy that embodies opportunities for growth and creation of options. It provides a strategic framework that navigates individuals and groups through the challenges of change.

Values
  1. Solution focused approach, accentuating strengths and recognizing challenges as opportunities for growth.
  2. Value and celebrate diversity, including people, experiences and circumstances; recognizing such diversity and cultural competence is germane to development and resolution. (Cultural relevance)
  3. Form a collaborative network that maximizes outcomes and goal attainment.
  4. Promote the development of critical thinking and resolution.
  5. Define goals that propel individuals and groups toward their destiny.

Principles
  1. No pain, no gain – going up a Broken Elevator is impossible. Taking the stairs is an alternative that will require energy and effort.
  2. YOU are in control of your destiny – get in YOUR game and play to win!
  3. Change agents leave the past and live the future.

Framework for Cultural Competence

Cultural competence, as defined by Cross et. al. (1989) refers to a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system, agency, or amongst professionals and consumers, that enables that system, agency, or those professionals and consumers, to work effectively in cross-cultural situations. Cultural competence is a developmental process that occurs over time. It embodies five essential elements: (1) value diversity, (2) conduct self-assessment (3) manage the dynamics of difference (4) acquire and institutionalize cultural knowledge (5) adapt to diversity and cultural contexts of the communities.

BE’s approach to working with individuals and organizations is derived from this framework. Culture is an innate component of who you are. Culture informs your attitudes and beliefs, and your cultural experiences inform your decisions. BE utilizes this distinct integration of knowledge and information in our approach to design, implement, and evaluate.
